Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

There is no doubt that Friday is an ʾʾEidʾʾ or ʾʾfestivalʾʾ for the Muslims, as it says in the hadeeth narrated from Ibn ʾAbbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: ʾʾThis is a day of ʾEid that Allah has ordained for the Muslims, so whoever comes to Jumuʾah, let him do ghusl, and if he has any perfume let him put some on, and you should use the miswaak.ʾʾ Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 1098; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, describing the special virtues of Friday:

Thirteen: It is a day of ʾEid that is repeated every week.

Zaad al-Maʾaad, 1/369

Thus the Muslims have three Eids: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which come once every year, and Jumuʾah which is repeated once every week.

Secondly:

With regard to the Muslims congratulating one another on the occasions of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, this is prescribed and it is narrated from the Sahaabah (may Allah be pleased with them). This has been discussed previously in the answers to questions no. 49021 and 36442. As for congratulating one another on the occasion of Friday, what seems to us to be the case is that it is not prescribed, because the fact that Friday is an Eid was known to the Sahaabah (may Allah be pleased with them), and they were more knowledgeable than us about its virtues, and they were keen to respect it and give it its due, but there is no report to suggest that they used to congratulate one another on Fridays. And all goodness is in following them (may Allah be pleased with them).

Shaykh Saalih ibn Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him) was asked: What is the ruling on sending text messages every Friday and ending with the phrase ʾʾJumuʾah mubaarakʾʾ?

He replied:

The early generation did not congratulate one another on Fridays, so we should not introduce anything that they did not do.

End quote from Ajwabat Asʾilah Majallat al-Daʾwah al-Islamiyyah.

A similar fatwa was issued by Shaykh Sulaymaan al-Maajid (may Allah preserve him), when he said:

We do not think it is prescribed to exchange congratulations on Fridays, such as saying to one another, ʾʾJumuʾah mubaarakʾʾ and so on, because it comes under the heading of duʾaaʾs and dhikrs, which must be based on a text (of the Qurʾaan or Sunnah) because this is purely the matter of worship and if it were good, the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would have done it before us. If anyone suggests that this is permissible, then that may imply that it is prescribed to say duʾaaʾs and congratulate one another after having done the five daily prayers and other acts of worship, and duʾaaʾ at these times was not done by the early generations.

If a Muslim prays for his brother on Friday with the intention of softening his heart and making him happy, and seeking the time when supplications are answered, there is nothing wrong with that.

Linguistically Bidʾah (innovation) means ʾa newly invented matterʾ.
The Shareeʾah definition of Bidʾah is: ʾʾA newly invented way [beliefs or action] in the religion, in imitation of the Shareeʾah (prescribed Law), by which nearness to Allaah is sought, [but] not being supported by any authentic proof - neither in its foundations, nor in the manner in which it is performed.ʾʾ Al-Iʾtisaam of ash-Shaatibee (1/37).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stated repeatedly that: ʾʾEvery newly-invented thing is a bidʾah (innovation), every bidʾah is a going astray, and every going astray will be in the Fire.ʾʾ (Reported by al-Nisaaʾi in al-Sunan, Salaat al-ʾEedayn, Baab kayfa al-Khutbah). Reports with the same meaning were narrated via Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) by Ahmad, via al-ʾIrbaad ibn Saariyah by Abu Dawud and via Ibn Masʾood (may Allaah be pleased with him) by Ibn Maajah.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say, when beginning a khutbah (sermon): ʾʾ... The best of speech is the Book of Allaah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of things are those which are newly-invented, and every innovation is a going astray...ʾʾ (reported by Muslim, no. 867)

If every bidʾah is a going astray, how can some people then say that there is such a thing in Islam as ʾʾbidʾah hasanahʾʾ? By Allaah, this is an obvious contradiction of the statement and warning of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stated that whoever innovates something new in the deen (religion) will have his deed rejected, and Allaah will not accept it, as is stated in the hadeeth narrated by ʾAaʾishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), who said: ʾʾThe Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ʾWhoever innovates something in this matter of ours that is not a part of it will have it rejected.ʾʾʾ (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Fath al-Baari, no. 2697). How can anybody then say that bidʾah is acceptable and it is permitted to follow it?

When a person innovates something and adds to the deen something that does not belong to it, he is implying a number of bad things, each worse than the last, for example:
That the religion is lacking, that Allaah did not complete and perfect it, and that there is room for improvement. This clearly contradicts the statement in the Qurʾaan (interpretation of the meaning): ʾʾ... This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion...ʾʾ [al-Maaʾidah 5:3]

1. That the religion remained imperfect from the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) until the time when this innovator came along and completed it with his own ideas.
2. That the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was ʾʾguiltyʾʾ of either of two things: either he was ignorant of this ʾʾgood innovation,ʾʾ or he knew about it but concealed it, thus letting his ummah down by not conveying it. That the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), his Companions and the righteous salaf (early generations) missed out on the reward of this ʾʾgood innovationʾʾ - until this innovator came along and earned it for himself, despite the fact that he should say to himself, ʾʾIf it was truly good, they would have been the first to do it.ʾʾ

Opening the door to bidʾah leads to changing the deen (religion) and opens the way for personal whims and opinions, because every innovator implies that what he is introducing is something good.
Following bidʾah leads to the cancelling out of sunnah practices and the ways of the first three generations of Islaam in which the Prophet Muhammad (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) described as being the best generations of Muslims. The first, the Prophet (Sallalaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) and his Sahaabah (companions). The second, the Taabiʾeen (the followers of the companions). The third, the Tabaaʾat-Taabiʾeen (the followers of the followers of the companions).
