Another fundamental aspect of our belief is the topic of Al Walaa wal Baraa’. This topic if understood correctly clearly distinguishes the kaafir from the Mu’min (believer) and lays down clear principles with regards to the alliance, support and friendship towards the kuffar.

This is a very misunderstood and neglected part of ones belief in today’s reality. We live in a world dominated by man made law with the authority in the hands of the kuffar, we find millions of Muslims residing in the lands of the kuffar having homes, businesses and families. The common misconception is that it is these governments in the western world that are providing for us our sustenance and allowing us to reside in their lands peacefully and hence we should therefore reciprocally befriend them and treat them with courteousness. At the same time living and interacting with the kuffar on a daily basis the Muslims have begun to befriend them to the point whereby they are treated better than Muslims.

Imam Ibnu Qayyim al Jawziyyah (RA), d. 751 C.E. defined taghout as, ʾʾAnything worshipped (maʾboud), obeyed (mutaʾa) or followed (matbou) besides Allah (SWT).ʾʾ Further elaboration of this important statement included the addition, ʾʾ...and consents to it.ʾʾ

The five conditions of al-Kufr bil Taghout:
1. To believe it is baatil.
2. To keep distance from taghout (Ijtinaab ut taghout)
3. Declaring animosity towards taghout (Al ʾAdaawa lil taghout)
4. Hatred (Al Bughodh)
5. Declare takfeer on taghout (Takfeer Al Taghout)
It is not enough to merely utter the Shahaadah for it to be accepted by Allah. It is a key to the gates of Jannah, but in order for the key to work, it needs to have the right notches. The Shahaadah must meet the following conditions for it to be accepted by Allah:
1.Knowledge: Comprises knowing that all things worshipped besides Allah are false.
2.Certainty: The heart must be firmly certain of the meaning of the two Shahaadah.
3.Acceptance: One should accept the Shahaadah fully, and not reject it.
4.Submission, obedience and acting upon all what the Shahaadah necessitates. A person must do what Allah ordered and abstain from what He prohibited.
5.Truthfulness: One must be truthful in professing the shahaadah.
6.Sincerity of worship: One must sincerely dedicate all acts of worship to Allah A L O N E ! ! !
7.Love: One must love the shahaadah and all that it necessitates. He must love Allah, His Messenger, and His righteous slaves. He must hate and show enmity towards all who show enmity to Allah and His Messenger. He must prefer what Allah and His Messenger love, even if it is differs from his desires.

The Shahaadah also necessitates that Allah is the only One Who has the right to legislate, whether it be in matters concerning worship or those concerning human relations, in both individual and public matters. The act of making something prohibited or lawful is for Allah alone. His Messenger (peace be upon him) merely explained and clarified Allah’s commandments. Allah says:

ʾʾAnd whatsoever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it).ʾʾ (59:7)

Whosoever judges different from what Allah revealed
